About Larry "Grumpy" Welch
Larry grew up in Hueytown, Alabama which provided abundant opportunities to develop his love for hunting, fishing and the outdoors in general. At the age of six, he began hunting rabbit, squirrel, and even a little coon. Rabbit hunting soon became his favorite sport and is a hobby he still enjoys today. Larry’s true passion, deer hunting, came later as he claims that there were hardly any deer around to be hunted back then!
At the age of 16 Larry got his first bow, a Bear Kodiak Recurve, he recalls kindly. With that bow he took his first deer in 1971, and that event began a love, devotion, and yes obsession (per his wife Debra) of hunting that he still has today. Larry had to work hard to develop his deer hunting skills as no one in his family or friendship circle was a deer hunter. He read as much as he could find on the subject and admits he spent lots of time experimenting with the trial and error method. Larry has stayed dedicated to the bow, rarely choosing the gun option, and has been exclusively using his bow for the last 15 years.
As with hunting, Larry’s professional career did not come easy; yet he found a field that he could excel. Larry has been in the drill shaft construction industry since 1970, and has been employed by Russo Corporation for the last 32 years as a field superintendent.
Larry has been a devoted husband to wife Debra for 39 years. Together they have two children, Shane 37 and Brooke 30. They are the proud grandparents of four grandchildren and are very involved in their everyday lives….not only by choice but also necessity. Shane and his family live next door; and Brooke and her family are presently living with Larry and Debra due to the economic stress that today’s American market has caused so many families, young and old alike.
Though life may be throwing some obstacles at Larry he is right at home on Cookn’ It Wyld Style having the time of his life!.
